Jeff O’Brien

I grew up in Yarmouth, Maine, a beautiful community with an indelible love of the arts and the ocean.

I attended Massachusetts College of art, where I studied sculpture, with a concentration in glass. As much as I loved expressing my own ideas through my work, it was in art school that I discovered my enjoyment in helping others translate their designs from an idea to the physical form. I thrive in collaboration.

As a young artist my first foray into woodworking was that of a supporting role to my glass art, constructing pedestals, light boxes, frames, etc. It was when I tried lathe work as a way of exploring forms familiar to me from the glass world, that I was bitten by the woodworking bug, so to speak.

I began my formal carpentry career as part of a crew specializing in timber framing. During this chapter, I realized that my eye for detail could be an asset in the world of cabinetry and furniture making, where margins of error are slim and form carries as much weight as function.

Cabinetry and furniture have become the medium through which I can connect with my true love as an artist: the intersection of beauty and function. I love creating objects that are visually interesting in forms that will be of use, beyond the therapeutic characteristics of the visual arts.

The past decade as a sculpture artist and craftsman of high end residential carpentry has crystallized what I first discovered as a young artist and what has defined my working life: a passion for quality craftsmanship that serves a greater collaborative vision.

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my sons Finnegan and Charles, my partner Lindsay, and our dogs Moose and Hannah. Other things that make me tick are traveling, cooking (and going out to eat), hiking, keeping up with my fitness at the gym, taking in live music, swimming at the lake, and, like most people, crossing an item or two off my to-do list…right before I add three more.
